A Command for Christian Men.
Fear has a way of paralyzing even the strongest men. It whispers that you’re not ready, not qualified, not enough. It points at the obstacles and reminds you of your past failures. And too often, you listen. You shrink back. You settle for safety instead of stepping into what God has called you to do.
But God never gave you a spirit of fear. He gave you a command: Be strong and courageous.
These words from Joshua 1:9 weren’t spoken to a man who had everything figured out. Joshua was about to lead a nation into a land filled with giants and walled cities. Moses was gone. The pressure was immense. And three times in that first chapter, God told him the same thing: be strong and courageous.
If you’re facing something that makes your stomach tighten, this verse is for you.
The Full Verse That Changes Everything
Let’s read Joshua 1:9 in full: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Notice the foundation of the command. God doesn’t say “be strong and courageous because you’re naturally talented.” He doesn’t say “because the odds are in your favor.” He says, “because I am with you.” Your courage isn’t based on your ability—it’s based on His presence.
The same God who parted the Red Sea, who stopped the Jordan River, who brought down the walls of Jericho—that God is with you. Not might be. Not will be later. Is with you right now, wherever you go.

Why Christian Men Struggle with Courage
Let’s be honest. Many of us are afraid to admit we’re afraid. We pretend we have it together while our hearts race. We avoid hard conversations, delay important decisions, and stay in jobs or situations that feel safe but small. We call it wisdom. God calls it disobedience.
Courage isn’t the absence of fear. It’s moving forward even when fear is screaming. Joshua was afraid. He had giant shoes to fill. But God didn’t remove the fear—He commanded Joshua to act despite it. And He promised His presence as the reason.
You will never feel ready. The timing will never be perfect. The critics will never be silent. But the command remains: be strong and courageous.

How to Live This Out as a Man of God
You don’t need to be a general leading an army. You need to apply this in your everyday life. Here’s how:
1. Identify where you’ve been shrinking back. What conversation are you avoiding? What step of faith have you been delaying? What area of leadership have you abdicated? Name it. Courage begins with honesty.
2. Remind yourself of God’s presence. Fear grows when you feel alone. But you are never alone. Before you walk into that meeting, that difficult talk, that new responsibility, whisper: “The Lord my God is with me wherever I go.”
3. Take one small step of courage today. You don’t have to conquer the whole mountain. Just take the first step. Send that text. Make that appointment. Speak that truth. Small acts of courage build a backbone of strength.
4. Stop rehearsing worst-case scenarios. Fear loves your imagination. Every time you picture failure, you’re practicing fear. Instead, rehearse God’s faithfulness. What has He already brought you through? He hasn’t failed you yet.
5. Lead your family with boldness. Your wife and kids need to see a man who fears God more than he fears people. That means apologizing first, praying out loud, and making hard decisions with kindness and clarity. Courage at home changes generations.

The Strength You Didn’t Know You Had
Here’s the secret: you already have what you need. Not because you’re a natural hero, but because the God who commands you also equips you. His strength shows up best when you admit your weakness and step forward anyway.
The men God uses aren’t the fearless ones. They’re the ones who feel the fear and move forward because they trust the One who goes before them.
A Daily Reminder to Stay Strong
Courage fades when you forget the command. When your alarm goes off and the day’s battles loom, you need something to bring you back to Joshua 1:9. Something you can see, touch, and hold onto before your feet hit the floor.
If you’re looking for a simple, practical anchor for this powerful truth, you can find one right here. Let it be a daily nudge to stop shrinking back and start stepping forward.
Be strong and courageous. Not tomorrow. Not when you feel ready. Today. God is with you. Go be the man He made you to be.
